2026-07-04 Fireworks, Order, and the Brief Human Mission
Today is Independence Day in the United States, and I watched fireworks at night.
When fireworks rise from the ground, each line of light seems to have its own direction. They do not move in one straight line, nor do they unfold along a single path. They rise together into the sky, open at a certain height, light up separately, and spread toward different directions. Yet precisely because each line moves differently, they form one complete flower in that moment.
Then they disappear.
Watching them light up and fade away, I suddenly felt that this resembles human destiny. Each person seems to arrive in the world with a brief trajectory. Some shine more brightly. Some remain quieter. Some rise higher. Some spread near the edge. Most of the time, we do not know what we are forming together with others, or whether our small point of light is truly seen by anyone.
But when many human trajectories meet within the same era, a temporary order appears.
The beauty of fireworks is not that they remain for a long time. It is that, within a very short period, they complete their unfolding. They do not occupy the sky permanently, nor do they try to prove that they will last forever. Their mission seems to belong to that moment: rise, open, shine, and disappear.
Perhaps human beings are similar.
No matter how hard one person works, no one can remain in history forever. Many judgments, efforts, sufferings, and forms of persistence eventually scatter like light. But that does not mean they are meaningless. Perhaps meaning does not lie in one line of light lasting forever. Perhaps it lies in the moment when many people’s actions, choices, mistakes, corrections, and efforts briefly form a structure that later generations can still continue to see.
One generation forms part of an order, then steps back. The next generation continues from there, unfolding in its own way.
This reminded me that order in complex systems does not usually exist as a complete form from the beginning. It often emerges temporarily from many dispersed actions. Each person may feel like only a small point. But when enough points relate to one another within the same time, structure appears. It may be brief. It may be fragile. But it existed.
After the fireworks fall, the sky becomes dark again. Yet those who watched them remember that the sky had just been lit.
Perhaps what human beings leave behind is also like this. We cannot guarantee that we will be remembered forever, nor can we guarantee that every effort will be fully preserved. Many things disappear. Many names are forgotten. Many voices are covered by new voices. Yet human beings continue, generation after generation, to live, judge, build, make mistakes, correct them, and pass what remains unfinished to those who come after.
Tonight, watching the fireworks, I did not feel that their disappearance was sad. Instead, I felt it was honest. They knew they could not remain forever, so they gave their fullest form to that one moment.
Perhaps a person cannot demand permanent existence. But within a limited time, one can still try to participate in forming a clearer order.
Not every line of light needs to become the center. Often, the real structure is formed by lights moving in different directions. They are not the same, but they open together under the same sky.
Current Observation
Fireworks revealed a brief form of order: each line of light moved toward a different direction, yet together they formed one flower.
Perhaps human beings are similar. Each generation carries its own mission, completes one part, disappears in part, and passes the unfinished structure to those who follow.
What matters may not be whether one line of light can remain forever, but whether, within its own time, it truly participated in the moment of shared formation.
