Judgment Before Execution
Today I discussed my research and published papers with a friend who also studies artificial intelligence.
After our conversation, I found myself returning to a question that has remained central throughout my work.
As artificial intelligence increasingly participates in real-world activities, an important question is not only how capable AI becomes, but where human judgment should remain within systems that produce real-world consequences.
My current research position can be summarized as follows:
Human judgment should precede consequential system execution.
Many discussions focus on making systems faster, more capable, or more autonomous.
However, real-world execution often means that real consequences have already occurred.
A payment, an approval, an identity classification, or an automated instruction may all produce effects that cannot simply be undone afterward.
For this reason, my research is less concerned with whether AI should be used, and more concerned with where human judgment should remain when people and AI participate together in consequential decisions.
I believe this is a question worth continuing to study.
Today's conversation also reminded me that long-term research is strengthened not by constantly changing its message, but by continuing to observe, document, and develop the same central question over time.
This diary records one point that I confirmed again today:
Judgment before execution.
It represents one of the continuing public research positions that my work is exploring.
